I had an energy issue for years: I didn’t have any.
I had to re-configure what I did for a living and how I reacted to the world, how I spoke to myself, who I spent time with. Nutrition made a difference too, but here I focus here on the levels besides the physical.
Solutions to Create More Energy in Your Life:
Everything that caused me to leave my center had to leave my life. People and groups, included.
There were people who I knew from long ago who labeled me as “ineffective” because I was unassertive. As I grew in confidence, the mold they built for me, no longer fit. It felt constraining, and the new me felt limited. I no longer felt comfortable in their company. Maybe the change made them uncomfortable. Perhaps, it stretched their own sense of what was “normal.”
Then there were groups I was associated with that I had to leave. They were getting more energy out of me than I was getting from them.
Then I had this longing to please other people.
(It began at a young age when I wanted to solve my mother’s depression), but this made me tired. I wasn’t speaking truthfully. And living and speaking half-truths weaken us. I had to stop wanting to please.
I had to stop reacting to media which also took me out of my center.
I had to stop reacting to media and others in anger—I had to put some distance between myself and the television. See it as the drama that it is.
I had to change my job.
Towards the end of one particular teaching job, It got so bad that I couldn’t drag myself into the building I worked. My whole body grew weary as I got closer and closer to the front door. Over the years, this educational facility became fueled by politics instead of serving the students and helping teachers do their jobs. When I first worked there the place was fueled by curious students and passionate teachers. Jobs were respected, innovation was too.
Finally, my body broke down. I had no more energy to fire off adrenaline and cortisol—the stress hormones—and I had to rest. I had to nap…a lot. Stress was from achieving, pleasing, competing, leaving my center. I reached a time in my life where energy had to come from being, not resisting or competing–relaxing and doing from a place of centeredness.
I got help from a new health practitioner and learned that some of my cells were over firing. My system was way out of balance. Just like being hyper-vigilant in my life, the cells in my body were being over vigilant. Seeing this helped me understand the need to relax.
More things that suck our energy and vibrancy:
- Pretending to be something other than our best selves.
- Gossip (seems to weaken the energy system)
- Sympathy instead of empathy. (sympathy drags us down to another’s level.
- Letting nosy aggressive people take your energy by demanding to know things about you that is none of their business.
Last Tip: Protection from Negative Energy
If you are in the company of people you don’t feel comfortable with or you sense there is negative energy, here’s a qigong technique to stay centered in your energy: you touch the index finger and thumb. It can help keep your energy from getting siphoned off. Here’s a photo of the fingers in this position. (You can lay your fingers by your sides or put in your pockets so others don’t see them.)
Here’s a video for more information from my favorite qigong teacher, Chunyi Lin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCGZVEqKldo
