I love animals. And I love signs. So when an animal comes across my path at an unusual time or in an uncommon way, I go straight to my animal totem book.
Out on my bike ride this morning, I stopped at the park and sat on a bench by a lake. I was tired. At times, exhaustion has been the only way for me to let go of striving and rest in the moment.
I like what Emerson wrote that “in nature, every moment is new.” I waited to see what showed up.
A lone turtle came swimming towards me. He looked like he was having fun kicking gently with those back legs. Then he rested right off shore a few feet from me.
He waited and waited at the surface resting until food showed up. He opened his mouth for small pieces of vegetation or insects which floated on by. He didn’t have to go looking for anything.
He lay at ease with all his surroundings. I noted him, and I thought, I need to do that. Wait till the food or in my case, the opportunity, to show up.
I strive and strive sometimes and have no patience to wait for what I need to show up. It happens in the car, when I try to get some place in a hurry, or at my desk multitasking as I market my book, take online training and plan for classes. I get overwhelmed at the choices and the tasks in front of me.
I need to listen to turtle totem.
“If you have chosen the turtle symbol, you are being asked to honor the creative source within you, to be grounded to the earth, and to observe your situation with motherly compassion.”
I love this.
“Turtle warns of the dangers of ‘pushing the river…’” (Sands and Carson, Medicine Cards, page 77)
How true. I’ve been pushing the river. And the river doesn’t care or respond to my pushing. The river goes. So just stand by the side, or wade in, or go with the flow of the river. Pushing it doesn’t work.
I needed patience for things to unfold and for the work I was putting in to everything to come to fruition.
Which animals show up in your life what are they saying to you?
